Groundwater is fresh water (usually from rain or melting snow) that soaks into the soil and is stored in the tiny spaces (pores) between rocks and particles of soil. Groundwater is the major source of all water consumed in Marathon County. The quality and quantity of groundwater can be affected by naturally occurring minerals and chemicals, but is also often connected to actions and uses on the land surface. The condition of our groundwater has implications for agriculture, recreation, businesses, private and municipal well owners, homeowners, and many others.

Marathon County Groundwater Plan Update

To protect and appropriately manage this vital resource, Marathon County is updating it’s Groundwater Plan. This process involves assessing groundwater quality and quantity within the county in order to better understand the current condition of our water, identify any potential concerns, and provide data-informed guidance on strategies and policies that may be pursued to manage our groundwater into the future.

This work is in alignment with objective 6.3 of the Marathon County Strategic Plan to “protect and enhance the quantity and quality of potable groundwater and potable surface water supplies,” with a stated outcome of updating the Marathon County Groundwater Plan by the end of 2024. In order to develop a plan that is representative of the entire county, the County felt it was critical to eliminate any real or perceived barriers that may impact landowner participation. To that end, the Marathon County Board of Supervisors approved funding in December 2022 to update the Marathon County Groundwater Plan to ensure that eligible landowners that wish to participate in the study can do so without incurring any cost to take part.

Groundwater Plan Update Timeline

The update will take approximately 18 months to complete, with the plan anticipated to be published by the beginning of 2025. Opportunities for the public to engage in the process and provide input will shared in early 2024.

The first phase of the work is focused on collecting voluntary water samples from up to 1,000 private wells throughout the county.

  • Sampling will begin in October 2023 and continue through April 2024.
  • Water samples will be screened for nitrates, dissolved minerals, atrazine, and possibly select forms of bacteria. There is no cost to eligible landowners to participate in the sampling effort.
  • The eligibility of a landowner to have their well screened will be determined by the study’s sampling methodology. Participation is on a voluntary basis and eligible landowners will understand how the data would be used before agreeing to have their well tested. Only eligible landowners will be contacted and offered the opportunity to participate.
