Where to Pay

Paying in full and first installments are received by your local treasurer. A copy of your tax bill can be retrieved from the County's Online Land Records system.

Second installments and late payments (Excludes City of Wausau):

Made by credit card or electronic check through the County's Online Land Records system.

Credit card payments have a convenience fee of 2.39% and electronic checks have a convenience fee of $1.50 for payments up to $10,000. Credit card and electronic check payments will be posted when the funds arrive at Marathon County.

City of Wausau has an ordinance for January 31st, April 30th, and July 31st payments. The City of Wausau's Treasurer's office handles all payments for their city and as such, payments are not to be made to Marathon County.

When are Taxes Due

Tax bills are mailed by your municipality after budgets are set and rates are calculated. This is usually during the first 2-3 weeks in December. It is important to read any insert from the local treasurer for times and locations or special instructions.

Due Dates:

Payment Type Date
Full Payment / 1st Installment January 31st
2nd Installment July 31st

Late Payments

Late payments make the entire tax amount delinquent. The installment options are no longer available. Late payments incur interest at 1.5% per month from February until paid. No reminder notices are sent in Marathon County.

Postmark is acceptable. Please make sure it has correct postmark as some post offices close early and the blue drop boxes aren't always picked up the same day mail is inserted. There is a five business-day grace period for each installment. The grace period requires the payment to be in the hands of the treasurer on the fifth business day, it does not include postmarks. If you have questions, please call 715-261-1150.
