Geographic Information System (GIS)

 Est. 1990

The mission of the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) program is to engage geospatial technology to enhance the quality of decision-making, support and inform governance, create and delivery of superior digital data, and improve cost-effective delivery of services for Marathon County’s residents, businesses, and government agencies.

What we do

  • Administer and operate geospatial software products and systems.
  • Create, manage, and maintain geospatial data sets (tables and layers).
  • Create, manage, and maintain web applications that leverage geospatial data for analysis and decision-making.
  • Create, manage, and maintain software services that enrich other county systems with geospatial data.
  • Produce digital maps of County information.

These services are overseen by the Land Information Office located in the Marathon County Conservation, Planning, and Zoning Department and guided by the Marathon County Land Record Modernization Plan.

Paper Maps may be purchased from the Conservation, Planning, and Zoning Department based on the follow fees.

Printed Map Price:

$1.00 per linear foot for line work or $2.50 for full saturation.

Consultants working on behalf of a municipality (with written authorization from a municipal official) may receive digital data at no charge when the request can be completed in less than an hour.  Printing and digital media charges will be as specified.

 


Land Information Council

The Marathon County Land Information Council is chaired by the Land Information Officer who is the County's representative to the Wisconsin Land Information Program (WLIP). 

The WLIP provides financial and technical support to local governments for land records modernization efforts.  The Land Information Officer oversees the preparation of guidelines used to coordinate the modernization of land information and participates in the development of countywide plans for land records modernization.

FAQs

Can your maps and apps be used as legal documents?

No. The maps and information provided by the Marathon County website are not legal instruments and are to be used for reference purposes only, not as a substitute for legally recorded maps, surveys, or other documents.

Can Marathon County survey my property?

Marathon County does not do survey work. The Wisconsin Society of Land Surveyors maintains a list of registered surveyors available for hire.

How often is your property data updated?

Our property and cadastral data is updated every month. It may take a few months for property ownership changes to be reflected in our data.
