Healthy Marathon County

Local health departments are charged with the role and responsibility to carry out a community health improvement process. Since 1993, Wisconsin statutes have required communities throughout Wisconsin to develop and implement local health plans to address health conditions impacting their residents. This process has been referred to as the "Community Health Improvement Process" (CHIP), named in part for the resulting health status changes in a community and the people that live there.

Healthy Marathon County is our vehicle for impacting Marathon County residents’ health through organizational and community involvement. Healthy Marathon County works in partnership with the Marathon County Health Department. Together, we gather health-related data, determine priority health issues, develop plans to address health priorities, garner community resources, and evaluate our impacts in creating a healthy community.  For more information, visit the Healthy Marathon County website.

Food Systems

Local food is a win-win for Marathon County. With a proud heritage in agriculture, local food contributes to our economy and our health. In recent years, the Marathon County Health Department has worked to connect consumers with farmers by expanding farmers markets. Four farmers markets are able to accept FoodShare and other forms of payment, such as Debit. Farm to School is a national movement to increase the use of fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables in school lunch programs, connect local farmers with the community, and provide opportunities for hands on teaching to students through educational workshops and school gardens.
